A Question I was Asked on Quora....

Some questions must not be answered directly. They very easily get tagged as opinion. So I will define a few points here and turn the question back to you.

Your Question - ‘Are women responsible’ - ‘For their OWN’ - ‘SAFETY’ ?

SAFETY - Imagine a metal box with an opening on one side. Most of you will imagine a SAFE. A box where you store valuables. You call it safe because you believe that no one can gain access into that box without the key/password that can otherwise open it. But yet we know of many cases where this safe has turned out to be unsafe. And it has happened so because those who broke the safe did so where the SAFE was unguarded by a security personnel. Which implies that - That which is required to be SAFE must also be SECURED.

FOR THEIR OWN - In India, corruption has got into every nook and corner of the system. And it has made things worse by corrupting the security structure. We could not stop an attack on one of our most secured structure ‘Parliament’ that happens to be the epitome of our democracy. We could not stop a 26/11. And in recent times, a few Pakistanis were found living illegally in bangalore with valid aadhar cards.

But for a minute, let's assume each and every law enforcement officers is as honest as Harishchandra. They will still fail to provide security to our nation. Because they are 0.1 % of our entire population. There is only 1 cop for every 840 citizens. And according to some criminal stats I read long back - 10% of any population consists of criminal minds. So that makes it 1 cop vs 84 criminals. And the cops are definitely human beings. Which means they cannot be omnipresent for a billion people.

ARE WOMEN RESPONSIBLE - Are men completely safe from being victims of crime ? I definitely don't believe so. So the question should be - Are WE responsible for OUR OWN SECURITY?

Looking at what I've shared above, I believe you know what the answer is. What I've stated are facts. So I'd like YOU, the intelligent reader of this piece, to answer this intelligent question all by yourself for yourself.

How Safe Are Women In India ?

Introduction - I've been asked to answer this question on #Quora many times. Hence thought of putting this up on my blog. Understanding my perspective requires you to park your emotions for a while. As I believe one needs to be emotionally neutral to be able to understand the challenge accurately & arrive at a foolproof solution. I sincerely hope this small piece will put the most widely discussed issue in the right perspective. So please read on & share this if you agree or your views if you don't.

If you have to withdraw 100,000 cash from the bank, you'd take precautions that even cops might not take with VIPs. That's because you ACCEPT that this is your hard earned money and whether or not the police is there or not, if you lose this money - it will be your loss and your responsibility.

You also know that it is your fundamental right to safety and freedom to walk around with valuables. However you'd be a fool to try and exercise your rights, being completely aware of the criminals and their intentions. And not to forget the fact that we are a billion + population and the police cannot be omnipresent for all.

Now women, replace this 100,000 with your life. What precaution do you take everyday to keep yourself secured. Or are you screaming about your fundamental rights to walk worry free at night and expect those with malicious intent to educate themselves on the fundamental rights ? Or are you stuck in a vicious circle of the media blame game between cops, court and the government?

UNDERSTAND THIS - ANY place on this planet is safe for you, if you take responsibility to train yourself against the prevalent malicious people. And No Place is safe if you choose to blame everyone else for what happens to you.

We have a law and order problem and a massive corruption problem. Your fundamental rights are as good as nonexistent unless these issues are addressed first. So till such time that we can educate our population, destroy corrupt practices and strengthen our law and order mechanism,

STOP BLAMING and take your Personal Security - Personally and Seriously. You are the CAPTAIN of your Life and MASTER of your Fate.

Simple Choice of Life - Engage or Run Like An Ass !

For months, an army man trains. With weapons and backpacks. Without them. In deserts and in mountains. In rain, sun and snow. They do so, to be able to defeat their enemy when they are attacked and live to tell the tale of bravery, It is not by mere training that they defeat their enemy, they do so by a choice they make when they are attacked. And what they tell themselves constantly while they train.

They have a choice to Engage or Run. When they run, most of the time they are shot at and they become victims (though this is not an eventuality as Indian Army is not trained to retreat) but when they choose to Engage, they increase their chances of living. 

This is the very choice we civilians face when we encounter malicious intent/action in daily life. We can either choose to run or to engage. Most of the times we run or find ways to run. And hence most of the times you become victims. So now, I can confidently say - You Choose To Be A Victim.

We face these malicious intent/actions on a daily basis. Just different degree. While getting onto a bus, you are pushed aside by one who is attacking your place on that ride. Now you might be saying its not that aggressive after all. Its just a place on the bus. Yeh Sure ! Its RED for the traffic and you begin to cross the road as its your GREEN but a cab guy wants to break that signal and almost drives onto your foot. You let him go with a few words of wisdom. Or you are at a review at your workplace and your colleague answers a critical question with an answer that you shared with him over a coffee just last eve. This could cost you your promotion.

Now out of the 3 situations - Bus, Cab & Colleague - the malicious intent of your colleague has hit you most. While it is not life threatening, it still is. You got hit by a soft toy (office politics) coz you refused to learn from the hard toys (bus/cab).

So now lets talk about Engagement with the enemy. Your enemy is everywhere. Only the degree of the enmity differs. Women have an enemy in every man. As they have not learnt the art of identifying their attacker before they become a victim.

And if you are living your life thinking you will not get effected by the constant war around you, you are in a state of hallucination. You NEED tactical life skills to get ahead in your life. A decade back there used to be 300 applicants for a single job. Today its over 3000. So if you think your employer can't find someone better than you - Hallucination.

So, cutting the long story short, YOU need Tactical Life Skills. Your Work Force needs Tactical Life Skills. Give this to yourself and your workforce and sit back to watch the magic unfold for you and your yearly targets.

A mind that is in denial, will never yield results for itself and for those who hire it.

War has Been Declared. You Have Less or No Time To Prepare !

If you judge this article by its title, you will for sure lose a chance to gain some critical info that can......

War has been declared. You have less or no time to prepare. You can choose to be a civil casualty or a fierce commando who will destroy his enemies and secure his people. This write up is for those who wish to become commando's.

The War

War has been declared. Not today, not yesterday but the day you graduated and an outdated empty gun (degree) was put in your hands to go fight the world outside and earn your daily bread. This gun was neither outdated nor empty when it was commissioned a century back. Back then very few had it. And the mere sight of it commanded respect from fellows. Some used to frame this gun onto their walls as a trophy of pride. But over the years, these trophies have vanished from the walls. Not because they are not trophies any more but because 10 out of 9 of your neighbors have it. Its no more a priced possession.  

The worst, these guns today come empty. And I say this as 90% MBA's and >60% graduates are not fit for a job (war). They have learnt NOTHING that can help any company fight their competition. These soldies are as useless as the outdated guns.

More You Sweat In Practice - Less You Bleed In War

Practice - makes a man/woman perfect. This is the biggest BULLSHIT you've been taught. Specially if your practice is not even 10% as hard as real war, you bloody playing a shooting game to prepare for real war. And guess what happens ? ?  You become INVALID. 

Look at this pic below very carefully. Notice every single weapon this commando is carrying on him and (without cheating and looking at the answer) guess the most deadliest weapon out of them all ! 

Not the night vision, not the automatic, not the flash bang or the fragment, not the secondary weapon. Nothing made of steel but yet made as strong as steel. It can bend to any degree without breaking. It can take any amount of pressure. It is mankind's greatest weapon that was gifted to him by the creator. 

The Mind

It doesn't matter how many enemies you shot down in a video game. The first time you fire in real life, your shoulder will hurt. There is a mini blast 6 inches from your face and you cannot close your eyes coz you will lose sight of the next opportunity. You will not know where it runs to hide. A commando is made of his mind. Not his weapons. The same way a successful man/woman is made of his/her mind and not their degrees. 

But your training happens in an AC classroom playing video games (theory exams). And when you get out of the paradise you see the real war and real casualties (depression, suicides). And this scares you. Or worse, make you immune and ignore. 

It is beyond a doubt that the education system is outdated. And so are the guns. It will take many more years for the high command to realize this and take some serious action. Or maybe they do realize this and don't want to take action. Sometimes, the command is scared to build an army of commandos as they could turn against the command when the command is corrupt. But this is just a speculation.

Building The Mind - Tactical Life Skills (TLS)

The mind is purely built and enforced by pressure. And this pressure is created by circumstances and people around us. Using controlled pressure, the mind and body can be built to work in synergy and deliver optimum performance. This explains why most Israeli youth are so strong mentally and physically. But they are so due to their choice of growing through the army after they get out of high school. An option that will be a dream in India. 

This controlled pressure is created when you train in Tactical Life Skills. While many not so worthy trainers claim to teach life skills, the use of their vocabulary exposes their mastery in the subject. They call it Life Skills 'Training' and they do it in a class room. 

I call it Tactical as your ability to think rational when you are under pressure is what will build your mind into a dependable force. Tactical also refers to the ability of the mind to create solutions on the go to challenges that are critical and/or life threatening. For eg. You are attacked by a criminal while on your way home. Or your cab driver reveals his malicious intent or your colleague you've trusted all this while has cornered you into a no retreat situation (happens in most rape cases). 

Tactical Life Skills also build you to take on work pressure. Meeting targets, fierce competition both in the company and against another. It is a skill set that is guaranteed to change the playing field for those who recognize the value and role of it. Such skills are built into the curriculum of the Armed Forces and hence they find it moronic to hear their civilian friends talk about work pressure sitting on a comfortable ergonomic chair in an AC cabin and beverage vending machines around. 

Imagine if you can train your mind to be as hard as theirs. You will experience a mental condition that most people believe is a myth. 

A Fearless Mind

I can understand how difficult it is for you to believe that it is possible for a civilian to achieve this state of mind without going through military grade training. You don't believe because you have not experienced it YET. But when you have, such a feeling is as addictive as cocaine. Being in a state of NO FEAR is an intoxication in itself. Something I experienced during my Counter Terrorism Training in Israel. I realized it was a tough job to die. I did things I believed that would get me killed and I live to tell the tale. Tactical Life Skills are for those who are frustrated living a feared life. Fear of physical, mental, emotional and financial insecurities. TLS is for those who don't want to be civilian casualties in this war of being the best they can be. 

In fact, the real war is much better because you know your company will bring you back wounded. In the corporate - You Are FIRED !

I dare you to a session of tactical life skills. Don't ask for a DEMO. This is not a video game. You'll need some courage to blindly enroll into this program and trust your instincts.

Awareness to #ZTAC (Zero Tolerance Against Crime).

Actions To Show Your Support to #ZTAC

We've heard this from just enough many people and enough many times. But has anyone really told you about 'your role' in making our society a 'Zero Crime Zone' ? I believe not. So here are some TIPS (Tactical Information for Planning Security), Tricks, Suggestions from a subject matter expert. We suggest you take them seriously. I do not need to write for those with deep pockets as they hire security personal. This article is for us. For the citizens who are most affected by such crime. 

1. Understand what personal security is: We've all seen movies that have a rich guy surrounded by a Bodyguard (Salman Khan flick) or Personal Security Detail (13 Hours). Not just that they were made by 2 different woods, there is a big difference between how each functions. 
   
   While the Bodyguard is a single operative in most cases, he is hired based on his gorilla looks (at least in India). While a PSD is hired on his tactical intelligence and knowledge of prediction & deterrence techniques (what we train you on in our Personal Security Training). While the gorilla bodyguard can't see a crime brewing around him or the VIP, a PSD can smell trouble. And this doesn't take super intelligence. 
   
   Security is about being able to predict a crime and thinking of a counter to prevent the criminal plan being implemented. It's all about early prediction and preparation. Its 80% Mind Tactics and 20% Physical tactics.
   
   
2.   Securing Live Assets: Live assets are those which breath. Family & Pets fall under this. The threat to live assets is the most common threat faced by billions around the world. To counter this, those with deep pockets - hire a PSD, some hire Gorilla's other common men and women train themselves in Personal Security Tactics (Personal Security is completely different from self defense). Personal Security as per me, should be a mandatory subject. And I seriously question the intent of our education system for not taking this seriously.
   
   But as parents & individuals, it is our responsibility to acquire such knowledge and pass it on to our generations.
   
   Securing Live Assets, includes keeping them secured from attempts of - Kidnap, Physical & Sexual Abuse, Chain Snatching, Physical/Mental/Emotional attacks/blackmail, stalking etc. The only way to secure live assets from such crime is to build them with counter crime smartness and tactics. There is no other way of securing them if you have shallow pockets.
   
   
3.  Securing Tangible and Non Tangible Assets: Cars, house, money, office equipment, cell phone, tablet, laptop, files (physical and virtual data) etc. These are further divided into 2 sets - Low Threat and High Threat. And this is your choice. Depending on your personal security, the threat level of other assets is determined.
   You could be some one who is earning $500 (INR30,000) a month but you value your life and that of your family's more than the one who is making $10,000 a month. So your personal security is not really about your monetary worth. Its about how much you value your life and that of your family. Or how much you value your other assets. Its usually seen that those who earn less care for their assets more than those who earn more. Those earning less have a better sense of ownership of what they possess. And this bring us to our next point of knowing our adversary. 
4. Our Adversary: He/she is one with avg or below avg education but with good IQ and EQ. The reason probably is obvious that education didn't ruin them. They are usually from troubled backgrounds and have a weak or in some cases no moral compass. However, there are a minute percentage of such criminals who are seasoned - fearless of consequences of being caught, hurt or killed in action. To handle such criminals, one has to go through (to be read Grow Through) intensive Personal Security Training and Unarmed Combat. But lets talk here about the petty ones. The Chain Snatchers, Pocket Pickers, Street Robbers, Molesters and Rapists.
   
   To deal with these kind of criminals, you need mind tactics more than martial arts. You need to learn the rules of street engagement. You need to learn how to identify such criminals and how to most accurately predict their possible moves.
   
   Important Note: It is our responsibility to secure ourselves from such crime. With a 1.2 Billion population, expecting the law-enforcement to be omnipresent is impractical.  
   
   Most of these adversaries watch their pray long enough (depending on the crime) before they attack. One who is a chain snatcher will have less time to choose their victim, plan and execute while a rapist has all the time in the world to possibly befriend the woman he has chosen as his victim. To deter such criminals, if you could learn the perimeters that they look for in their victim, you stand a chance to alter those qualities/aspects in yourself.
   
   
5. Bystanders: As a society we suffer from excessive FEAR. And it is this disease that makes us the #1 choice of being the prey. Our adversaries gain their confidence from our fear. They know that we are not trained in Personal Security Tactics. That we fear. That we will freeze if they show us a knife or a gun that probably has never fired a round or can't fire. The adversaries use this fear to implant more fear. They even sometimes kill a citizen who's already dead by the fear just to remind us that they could kill us too.
   
   During my training at Israel, I did things that I once believe could get me killed. And then I had an UNBELIEVABLE realization. It's definitely NOT EASY to die. One has to be a chicken to let someone kill you. Once I had this realization and I knew that in no way I was a chicken, I became fearless. And it is this realization that we impart in our bootcamp and PST at Armored Spirit.
   
   The thought that I acted like a chicken when there was a crime being committed on someone and I could have saved them.....That though will kill me a zillion times and will need tons of courage to live with, than gathering the courage to go and save the victim. Believe me when I say this - None of you are chicken. You just have been made to believe that you are. In reality you are a force that no adversary would want to mess with.  Come for our PST and we'll prove it to you.

My Message to Gen Y

To,

A generation that is allergic to bull shit and gyan !

Dear Youth,

First of all, I need to tell you how happy I am to see your generation. A generation that believes in practical and logical being. I try my best every time I interact with you, to learn the good you have. So here is my no BS, no gran message to you all !

Bharat, completes 70 yrs of being a democracy. Most of us are not even half the age of this great nation. Most of us don't even know the price our generations before paid, so we can experience Freedom and Democracy. For 70 yrs those who came to the parliament did, what they were best at. Some rendered priceless service and some scammed and abused this nation for 70 long years. But this is the past.

We are now 63% of the nation's population. That is around 700 Million. Bharat has today more young people than any nation has people. Understand this power. But not forget what uncle Ben said - With great power, comes great responsibility. Here are a few responsibilities I have taken up and would like to share the same with you all.

1- ACCURATE THINKING. 

Let not anyone lure us to buy their ideology, their beliefs or their reasons for us to follow their path. We must develop the capability to gather information analyse it carefully and believe what we hear and see. Believe not the shadows (media) that we see or the echo (rumor) that we hear. The easiest way to enslave this country would be to turn us against our own people or an ideology that is against the spirit of unity in diversity of our nation.

2- VOTE 

The greatest power we have is our right to vote. The reason why we always find a non desired candidate winning, is because those who know his true character, don't vote. This privilege might come just once in 5 yrs,  but know that it has great power to shape our future. So please VOTE. When I find most local candidates unworthy, I broaden my vision and look for the best at the national level/PM candidate. The one I'd like to see represent me at the global  platform.

3- UNITED we STAND. 

Make our generation - our religion, caste and color. Belong to Gen Y. Let not the adversaries divide us into their sects to achieve their vested interests. Stop being used like cattle by those who care not for us but sacrifice us to break this nation further and gain their political motives. Understand what Nationalism really means. Don't buy others definitions of it . Look for logic.

4 - PEACE 

Know that our disappointments must be addressed. But not by destroying public property. The property that some would have earned by their sweat and blood. Property that would be earning someone and their family, their daily bread. Once we get angry, we are prone to being misguided. Anger is good when it is our tool. It destroys us when we become it's tool. SAY NO to blocking roads. SAY NO to violent protests. Use social media to campaign and gain support. And if still nothing happens - a Peaceful Non Co-operation Movement has been proven successful earlier and with social media, it can be much stronger. But make sure our way of demonstration doesn't affect the common man. He is one among us. But always remember UNITY.

5 - DON'T FEAR THE LAW - RESPECT IT.

Wear a helmet, don't jump a signal, don't ride rash and dangerous, don't speak on the phone while riding or driving. Abide by the law. And know why you do so. I have lost a young 22 yr old friend. The truck behind him broke the law and crushed his head. He broke the law because everyone does that. He didn't expect to kill a youth. But he must have seen many break the law. And he escaped the scene because no one stopped him. Law is made to protect us. Next time you pay a bribe for not obeying the law, NOTE that you paid that money as an asshole who don't deserve to hold this system accountable for its corruption and you too are as corrupt as those, who disgust us. When you respect the law, you will notice that you no more FEAR. And that my friends is a great state of mind to be in. NO FEAR !

"The law is not just to protect you from other's un/intentional actions but also protect others from your un/intentional actions". 

6 - CARE, DEPENDABILITY, TRUST, INTEGRITY. 

These 4 traits are the 4 legs, our relationships with our family, friends and society stand on. These are the 4 pillars that unite a nation. Even if one is weak, we lose balance. Learn to care for people around, at home, on the street, in the bus. It takes a character to be dependable. Build that character. No medal is as worthy as someone considering you dependable and trustworthy. And last but not least, have integrity guys. Integrity pays huge dividends. These 4 traits makes a classy individual. Have these traits and flaunt them.

7 - FOCUS (Follow One Course Until Success)

Your complete focus must be on building yourself strong -Mentally, Physically, Emotionally, Financially and Spiritually. Your career is utmost important to you right now. Technology can be your greatest friend or your worst enemy. It can help you build your career or help you waste valuable time. Use the social media, the technology and the connectivity to gather info that can equip you better with skills and knowledge. Don't waste too much time chasing virtual characters around town. I know its fun. But remember you are 700 Million of you. And we don't currently have so many earning opportunities for all. Some of you might have to leave your comfort zones and become entrepreneurs and create jobs for the rest of us. Do that. The rewards are multi-fold. Don't lose your focus onto political issues that are designed to distract you.
Stay FOCUSED !

8 - Security Awareness 

We live in one of the most violent times. Terrorism is becoming a fast spreading virus. It is critical that we prepare ourself to face this virus. Security Awareness (check this link)is as critical for us as is awareness about the subjects we study. Make a group of friends. Discuss terror attacks. Discuss Ideologies. Discuss why they do what they do and how they do what they do. Research. Train yourself on basic counter terrorism preparedness techniques as a group (this is not equal to learning martial arts but you could start with it). Keep your eyes and ears open when in public areas. Watch each others 6 (back). We are a Billion CCTV's (eyes). If we train ourselves, not even a stone can go missing from a street.

"Imagine how scared and terrified a terrorist would feel to enter a public place where everyone is alert, prepared and WATCHING. You could recognize him by his wet pants". 

Remember guys, a strong individual makes a strong family, makes a strong society, make a strong city, make a strong state and make a strong nation. We cannot and must not pay for the mistakes of our older generations. And it will not be productive to indulge into a blame game. 

Let's take ownership of this nation and let's build it strong with our Care, Dependability, Trust and Integrity. Remember - Independence doesn't mean single.
It means In-Dependence. It means TOGETHER. It means depending on each other. I hope I have you guys thinking on some lines. Hopefully the lines that will lead our nation towards global peace and prosperity.

Security Analysis - Bangalore Molestation Case

I was waiting for #BangaloreMassMolestation or such an event to happen. I have been studying the PCI's (Pre-Crime Indicators) since a long time now. Its just like how the seismologist waits for his prediction of an earthquake to happen. Not because he wants it to but because he is prepared and he knows it will happen. Because he has data.

Below are results of a 2 question poll I had done a few weeks back. My analysis of the recent molestation events in #Bengaluru are based on these results.

The Analysis

There are 2 types of elements in any crime. Pre Crime Elements and Post Crime Elements. Those who want to play the blame game and keep passing the buck and make TRP's out of it will always focus on #PostCrime elements, such as - Police, Law & Order, Courts, Government etc.Their primary focus is to punish the culprits and diffuse the focus from the actual issue.

Those who wish to seek solutions focus on #PreCrime elements, such as - Themselves & Criminals.

The fact that most people in this poll blamed the Post Crime elements shows very clearly that we are being lead by the media that is focusing more on gaining TRP's by showing you what happened and who is to blame rather than why it happened and how it could have been prevented. Their solutions are also far from practicality and those which cannot give immediate results.

When I saw the CCTV Footage that is doing rounds - I felt sad for that girl. She made mistakes one after the other. She panicked and nearly gave in to the molester and was pushed by him to his choice of direction. I felt she had so much of time and options to deter this crime. There were tools around her that she could have used to alarm people around her. She got out from an Auto, why not take the auto till her gate ? From what looks like from the CCTV footage, the guys had been following her for a while. By just using a little bit of a personal security awareness, she could have deterred this crime so very easily. 

However she could do NOTHING....only because she thought this wont happen to her and she never trained or prepared for such a situation. If women think it is the job of the police to protect them then they will continue to be molested and rapped. And I don't say this coz the Police is incompetent. I say this coz they are outnumbered by population. There are only 119 police for every 1,00,000 citizens. They are doing whatever they can with little or no support from the public. 

No police in the world can be omnipresent where crime takes place. While there could be lapses at times but blaming them completely is just passing the buck.

If i get robbed, its my F6 problem. If i get attacked its my bloody problem. I didn't take precautions and I didn't train myself on basic personal security procedures.

Solution

The ONLY solution lies in the Pre-Crime Elements. One must take their Personal Security....Personally and Seriously. I'm not scared to walk on a dark road or such. Only because I carry with me the most deadly weapons - A Trained Mind and a Trained body. I am trained to incapacitate my attacker and call the cops for Post-Crime job. But in such a crime - The Criminal has become the victim. If I can, any woman or man can.

What women need today is Tactical Education. Not to be treated like sheep and remind them that the men are always there to protect them. The same men who watch when she is being molested or abused. The same men who disrespect her at home. We know not all men are bad but it so happens that such crime always take place when the good men are not around.
